Vol. 2 of Hess's field fortification series

More late summer and fall 2007 book notices are coming out. Regular reader Alex just emailed me that Amazon has a page up for Earl J. Hess's Trench Warfare under Grant and Lee: Field Fortifications in the Overland Campaign (University of North Carolina Press) and it's set for a Sept 07 release. Of course, since I have been looking forward to this title ever since I finished Vol. 1, it will surely be delayed until 2008!

Part of University of North Carolina Press's Civil War America series,Field Armies and Fortifications in the Civil War: The Eastern Campaigns, 1861-1864 was clearly one of the best military history books of 2005 (see my review). You might want to grab a copy if you haven't read it yet.

  2. Hello Drew

Thanks for keeping us updated on upcoming releases. Always look forward to upcoming books being published. I think Hess is planning a 3rd volume in this series? I thought it was either dealing with Petersburg or seacost fortifications?

Also looking forward to these books being released:
    1. Gordon Rhea's final volume in his Overland Campaign
    2. William Shea's study on Prairie Grove Arkansas battle

Have you possibly heard anything about these?

Are there others you are specifically looking forward to?

    Regards
    Don

  3. According to Hess, the third volume is still planned to be Petersburg. I haven't heard anything about Rhea. As for Shea, I haven't asked him about it in a long time, but I heard it was to be finished by summer 07 (when published? who knows, but hopefully soon after!)

'2007 and beyond' books I am looking forward to the most:

    1)Shea as above.
    2)Sellmeyer's history of Shelby's brigade (June 07)
3)Frazier's next book about the Sibley/Green brigade 62-63 (orig. scheduled for spring 07 but I've yet to see any mention of it on the press site)
    4) Mayeux's Fort DeRussy study (Sept 07)
    5) Jones-Imboden Raid hx by Darrell Collines (fall/winter 07)
    6) Beatie vol 3...hopefully any day now.

Some of those titles look very good. I have an update on Rhea. The following will be available from LSU later in the year, IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF GRANT and Lee. A photographic narrative of the Overland Campaign battlefields as they appear today.
