Some noteworthy but obscure Shiloh books

Sean Dail, in a posting on his blog from last week, was wondering if anyone had read the O. Edward Cunningham dissertation "Shiloh and the Western Campaign of 1862" (LSU, 1966). I haven't, but in an interview over at the Civil War Forum, Stacy Allen recommended it as a battle study of note, especially for the day-one action. He also praised "The Battle of Shiloh and the Organizations Engaged," (OP) by Major David W. Reed. They both sound like something I'd like to get my hands on someday. When David Woodbury told me a few months ago about the old transcripts from the Forum's archives, these were certainly the two books that stuck out.

  1. Drew, while I have not read Cunningham's dissertation, a couple of colleagues of mine did, and they praised it. My recollection is that, some years ago, a university press was interested in publishing it but could not determine if Cunningham was still alive or, if not, who would hold the copyright.

  2. I read all these eager articles proclaiming how some day soon any book can be printed on demand from a central source. None of them mention copyright issues!
