Fall '09 Westholme release: "Cavalry of the Heartland"

Just got the Westholme Publishing Fall 2009 catalog in the mail. I already knew about the new book from Russell Bonds, but was pleasantly surprised to also find the listing of an upcoming western cavalry study by the prolific Edward Longacre, titled Cavalry of the Heartland: The Mounted Forces of the Army of Tennessee (November 2009).

  1. Bonds book is taking a long time to appear. I note that Amazon's current delivery estimate is in October. I await it with interest. Is the publishing world feeling the economic downturn and getting slow?

  2. I only monitor CW books closely, but it's been my experience that the release dates given to the public have always been rough estimates at best. I haven't noticed too much difference during the recession.

  3. I hope Longacre tries to make it one of his best books. The topic is a completely fascinating and underrated one. When Longacre is good he can be a excellent writer. But in some of his books he seems to be just going through the motions. I hope he put it all in for this important subject.

  4. Chris,
That's the impression of his books that I get from others that have read them. As for me, due to the subject matter more than anything else, I never got around to reading any of Longacre's body of work ... although I was tempted by "Army of Amateurs".

  5. Drew,
I think that two of Longacre's best books are his award winning one on the cavalry during the Gettysburg Campaign and a quite splendid book on Henry Hunt that gives a good idea of the power of the artillery in the Army of the Potomac and the genius of Hunt. Those two books ,I think, are Longacre at his best and hopefully this one will be close to those.
    Thanks,
    Chris
