The Battle of Baton Rouge Second Edition

Self-published in 2006, Thomas Richey's The Battle of Baton Rouge added depth to Ed Bearss's forty year old Louisiana History article detailing in minute fashion the tactical aspects of the fight.  In the meantime, the author has uncovered enough new manuscript material to justify putting together an updated work, released last month as The Battle of Baton Rouge, Second Edition. I haven't seen the new one yet, but the first edition was well worth the time of any student of the battle.

  1. Thanks for this post; I'll probably get the 2nd edition. I've been interested in the 1st edition for a while (living in Baton Rouge, after all), but a rather disjointed presentation by the author at a lecture I attended a couple of years ago disappointed me. To be fair, he works at a local hospital (or did at the time) and had just left an operation before his lecture.

  3. Guys,
It's in the 'good not great' category (the 1st ed. anyway) but worth it overall, IMO. I plan on picking up a 2nd ed. too.

  4. Interesting that a 2nd edition is coming out. It was your review of the 1st edition that convinced me to buy it. I agree that it was good not great. Might have to look into the 2nd edition.

Imagine what a Cozzens or Shea (or Hess) could do with the material. That would be a great book!

  5. Thanks again. It's probably a matter of "any port...." but the review of the 1st ed. convinced me that it's not just a space filler. Not much is known about this fight and it had some unique characterostics.
