Booknotes III (August '12)

New Arrivals:

1. Holding the Line: The Battle of Allegheny Mountain and Confederate Defense of the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike, 1861-62 by Joe Geiger (WV Book Co., 2012).

Anyone interested in the 1861-62 campaigns in western Virginia will want to pick up a copy of this book.

2. The Grand Design: Strategy and the U.S. Civil War by Donald Stoker (Oxford Univ Pr, 2012 - pb).

As a collection (meager in size as it is), books analyzing Civil War strategy, operations, and tactics are an unsatisfying lot.  Stoker's book, reviewed here, approaches the type of meaty treatment that military history specialists crave. It is newly out in paperback.
