• Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites: Exploring Our Legacy, Second Edition

From my admittedly limited experience, Missouri's state park system is a gem. I've only been able to visit two places related to the Civil War, the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site and the Confederate Memorial State Historic Site outside Higginsville, and came away from both experiences impressed with how favorably they compared with the NPS in terms of preservation and interpretation. They are featured, of course, in Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites: Exploring Our Legacy, Second Edition, a massive oversized tome filled with photographs and explanatory text.
From the description: "The book features hundreds of photographs and includes information on all 88 state parks and historic sites, including the longest developed rails-to-trail project in the nation, homes of famous Missourians, Civil War battlefields, and other reminders of the past such as mills and covered bridges. The authors tell the complete story of the park system, from its inception in 1917 to the newest state park created in 2015,..." In addition to Lexington, battle parks in the system include the Athens, Carthage, Island Mound, and Pilot Knob sites, and there is surely some Civil War context with many others.
