Lepa's book is a short history of the final campaign in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864, when Union general Philip Sheridan's heavily reinforced Army of the Shenandoah crushed Jubal Early's much smaller Confederate command in a series of battles that finally closed the book on Confederate side offensives in the eastern theater. As the title states, the focus is on General Horatio G. Wright's Sixth Corps (the veteran heart of Sheridan's army), and the book follows the unit through the Third Winchester, Fisher's Hill, and Cedar Creek battles. "Following victories at Winchester and Fisher's Hill the Sixth Corps campaign culminated with a remarkable stand that stopped the attacking enemy and turned what began as a disastrous defeat into a spectacular victory at Cedar Creek."

ReplyDeleteI've always noted page length in my actual reviews. In fact, I've taken it a step beyond, listing both total page and main text/narrative page counts. For these "Booknotes" postings, just follow the link and you can easily find a rough page count (I say 'rough' because official figures from the publisher/distributor are often incorrect).

DeleteThanks for the response Drew. It's too bad that there has been no update regarding Ted's revised book. I was really looking forward to adding Cedar Creek to my 64' Valley collection. Unfortunately, obtaining a decent HE Howard copy is not an option as the going price is way too prohibitive. I love your reviews by the way. First time poster but a long time follower. I've purchased many a title due to your reviews and much to my wife's chagrin! Keep up the excellent work as always.
ReplyDeletePerhaps someone in the know might respond. I have no interest in overpaying for out-of-print H.E. Howard titles either. You never know, if Mahr never does do the update, there's a high likelihood considering the topic that some other talented person (maybe Scott Patchan) will give it a go.
