Booknotes: Astride Two Worlds

New Arrival:
Astride Two Worlds: Technology and the American Civil War edited by Barton C. Hacker (Smithsonian Inst Scholarly Pr, 2016).

In nine essays (including an introductory chapter from editor Barton Hacker), this book "addresses the various causes and consequences of technological change for the course and outcome of the American Civil War." Part One includes chapters dealing with the Union small arms industry, heavy artillery, information systems, and equine veterinary care. Part Two looks at Confederate torpedo boats, personal body armor, Confederate measures aimed at spoiling Union balloon aerial reconnaissance, and early flying machine designs.
