Congratulations to Earl Hess!

Earl Hess is the winner of the 2016 Tom Watson Brown Award presented to the author(s) of the previous year's best book "on the causes, conduct, and effects, broadly defined, of the Civil War" for Civil War Infantry Tactics: Training, Combat, and Small-Unit Effectiveness. Sharp readers will also recall that it was the CWBA Book of the Year, as well, an award of matching prestige but 50K less in prize money.

  1. This is good news for Earl Hess and the Civil War community at large. Dr. Hess is a tremendous researcher, writer, and historian and it is only right that his outstanding work is properly recognized.

I just finished reading his forthcoming Braxton Bragg study (September, 2016) which I am reviewing for a publication. It, too, is outstanding. I dot not believe the man sleeps, and I envy his focus and energy.

    Congratulations, Earl.

  2. Hello Drew

Thanks for the post about Earl Hess. I really enjoy this prolific writers work. It is nice to hear from Ted concerning the Bragg biography. Sounds like that is another well done work by this author. I'm sure he 2 or 3 other projects being worked on right now.

    Don H.
