Booknotes: "Stand to It and Give Them Hell" (pb. ed.)

New Arrival:
Stand to It and Give Them Hell: Gettysburg as the Soldiers Experienced it From Cemetery Ridge to Little Round Top, July 2, 1863 by John Michael Priest (Savas Beatie, 2016).

Originally published in 2014 in hardcover, this is the newly released paperback edition. Back in 1989, Priest's Antietam book employed a novel eyewitness narrative technique to convey a uniquely visceral, up-close view of an entire Civil War battle. It was followed later by South Mountain and Wilderness volumes. In this book, the action moves to the 2nd Day of Gettysburg, with soldier's-eye level accounts of the desperate fighting at Cemetery Ridge, the Peach Orchard, the Wheatfield, Devil's Den, and other places. The text is supported by dozens of high quality maps as well as a detailed numbers and losses appendix.
