The Battle of Ezra Church and the Struggle for Atlanta

In my interview with historian Earl Hess back in 2012, he mentioned that he had "books well advanced on Stones River, on infantry tactics in the Civil War, and on the battle of Ezra Church." It now appears that the last one on the list will make it out first. The Battle of Ezra Church and the Struggle for Atlanta will be a Spring 2015 release from UNC Press's wonderful Civil War America series.  Many of the recent Atlanta Campaign battle books have been the first of their kind and this one will be no exception.

  1. Earl Hess is one of my favorite Civil War historians, and I'm pleased to hear that his study of Ezra Church will be coming out in the spring. My g-g-grandfather was in a Louisiana regiment that was heavily engaged at Ezra Church so that makes the book especially interesting to me.

    1. I think I'm most interested in his infantry tactics book. I don't really like any of the stuff that's out there now (ex. Nosworthy, Griffith).

  2. Hello Drew

Thanks for the great information. I'm looking forward to all three. I fully agree with Jane, Earl Hess is of my favorite Civil War historians.

  3. Excellent. Earl is a good guy, and I enjoy his work very much. Ezra Church is in dire need of a good study. Not as sure about Stones River. My hunch is that the last couple may have caught him by surprise.

Now, if we could just get Ms. Jane Johansson to write for Savas Beatie, all would be right in the world. :) [Hello Jane.]

Keep up the good work, Drew.

    1. Ted,
Are you still on track to publish the Geise dissertation?

  4. Drew, we will be publishing the Geise work on the Confederate command in the trans-Mississippi, but no time track. It is dependent upon Jane Johansson's schedule. Maybe she will weigh in here.

We also want to do "The Maps of the Trans-Mississippi Theater" (2 volumes), and have a cartographer. Jane has a deep interest in authoring it to match the maps.

  5. Good news about the book on Ezra Church. It appears that Atlanta finally is getting its due in terms of monographs on the individual battles. Hess on Ezra Church and Patchan on Resaca means that battles in need of a good history will almost certainly get it. The one that still doesn't seem to grab anybody's interest is Jonesboro. That's a bit odd in light of the fact that Jonesboro is technically when the city was lost.. Maybe Ted can use his persuasion on somebody.
