To the Gates of Atlanta

Robert Jenkins, the author of The Battle of Peach Tree Creek: Hood's First Sortie, July 20, 1864, and his publisher Mercer University Press will be releasing the prequel volume To the Gates of Atlanta: From Kennesaw Mountain to Peach Tree Creek, 1-19 July 1864 next month. I had no idea this was coming or that he was putting together something of a series treatment. I hope Jenkins took to heart some of the constructive criticism of his Peachtree Creek study, which was quite a tome of messy magnificence.

  1. Drew: Here's an earnest plea that he get and listen to a good copy editor. It sounds as if the Peach Tree Creek book could have gone that way but the author wasn't interested. Always a mistake.

    1. Sadly, copyediting has all too often gone the way of maps. My reviews sound like a broken record on these issues but it annoys me that both are considered optional (or just as bad for the former, "corrected in the next printing").

    2. True enough. You see ample evidence with typos, etc., even from the academic presses. But those at least generally show the input of a good editor regarding style, repetition, content, etc. The Peach Tree Creek book would have benefited.greatly. I've always thought that authors, like those in any other profession, should heed Inspector Callahan's advice - "a man's got to know his limitations". .
