A dozen cavalry raid favorites

The early release of Chris Hartley's anticipated book Stoneman's Raid, 1865 got me thinking of some of my favorite "cavalry raid" books on my shelves.

Here's a sampling:

1. Sherman's Horsemen: Union Cavalry Operations in the Atlanta Campaign by David Evans.

2. The Lightning Mule Brigade: Abel Streight's 1863 Raid into Alabama by Robert Willett.

3. Morgan Is Coming!: Confederate Raiders in the Heartland of Kentucky by Betty Gorin. [review]

4. The Raiders of 1862 by James Brewer. [info]

5. Carters Raid: An Episode of the Civil War in East Tennessee by William G. Piston.

6. They Died by Twos and Tens: The Confederate Cavalry in the Kentucky Campaign of 1862 by Kenneth Hafendorfer.

7. Action Before Westport 1864, Revised Edition by Howard Monnett. [info]

8. Up from Arkansas: Marmaduke's First Missouri Raid, Including the Battles of Springfield and Hartville by Frederick Goman. [info]

9. Plenty of Blame to Go Around: Jeb Stuart's Controversial Ride to Gettysburg by Eric Wittenberg & JD Petruzzi.

10. Thunder from a Clear Sky: Stovepipe Johnson's Confederate Raid on Newburgh, Indiana by Ray Mulesky. [review]

11. General William Averell's Salem Raid: Breaking the Knoxville Supply Line by Darrell Collins. [review]

12. Yankee Blitzkrieg: Wilson's Raid through Alabama and Georgia by James Pickett Jones.

  3. Charles,
I've never gotten around to reading any of the Grierson's Raid books. I may be wrong, but I think most people still consider Dee Brown's the best.

  4. Charles,
It is amazing how much price and availability cycles back and forth for some books. Around 6 years ago when I purchased the Brewer book, it was difficult to find online and very expensive. Most listings were around $80! Now, it is very easy to find, and like you say, very reasonably priced.

  5. Drew: How about a list of the top 25 Civil War Cavalry Books ? I believe it would be worthwhile. James

  6. This is a good list. I especially enjoyed Evans' "Sherman's Horsemen."

We are about to add a substantial cavalry title to the literature with "Failure in the Saddle: Nathan Bedford Forrest, Joseph Wheeler, and Confederate Cavalry in the Chickamauga Campaign," by David Powell (Savas Beatie, October 2010). Our hunch is that battle enthusiasts will really like this one.

  7. James,
I agree it would be a worthwhile list project, but with cavalry operations only a recent area of interest for me, I am probably the wrong guy for it.
