New edition of Piedmont study

One of my nice "finds" of recent years was a fine condition copy of Scott Patchan's The Forgotten Fury for $10 at a bookstore that should have known better. If you can even find a copy online, they go for three figures (or at least they did last I checked). Now, for those that do not own a copy of this exceptional battle study, The History Press will be publishing a revised edition this month with the new title The Battle of Piedmont and Hunter's Campaign for Staunton: The 1864 Shenandoah Campaign.

  1. Drew,

In anticipation of the revised edition, the going rate for the old edition went from about $350 to $250 in the last month. Still a little steep for me.

  2. I think sellers find no other copies online for price comparison and just slap a low 3 figure number on it and hope someone bites.

  3. Worse yet, I think some of the sellers are scam artists. For a while, there was a seller on half.com who seemed to have every rare book I had on my list, but the price was typically marked up 200 to 500% over market when a copy came up for sale elsewhere. The company's extraordinary list of titles made me suspicious, and when I read reviews, found frequent complaints from customers who received notice that the book they had ordered was "out of stock." It looks like the company did not actually have an inventory, but instead was purchasing books from other sellers far below the price you paid and keeping the difference. At one point, they had the Piedmont book listed for over $1K. They have since disappeared from half.com, but my guess is that there are others doing the same thing.
